creatING collage flowers

You can build your flowers directly onto parchment paper by laying the paper right on the pattern and building up the light, medium and dark areas as indicated on the pattern. The pieces will stick to each other better than to the parchment paper so start with some large shapes and build up, overlapping and layering the pieces.

Below are two different approaches, one is tracing the pattern areas matching light, medium and dark colors. The second is a more freeform method that gives the impression of flowers by cutting and placing color blobs to indicate light, medium and dark areas.

Whichever method you choose, when you are happy with the floral areas, iron them right on the parchment paper with a hot steam iron, for about 30 seconds in each area. When cool, carefully peel off of the parchment paper– they will still be sticky on the back– and place them on your background fabric.

 Freeform Impressionistic Flower Method

You can build your flowers directly onto parchment paper by laying the paper right on the pattern and cutting several large shapes with lobed edges to cover the main flower area. Then cut dark and light shapes, like puzzle pieces, and place them– dark along the bottom and left edges of the clusters, and light along the top and right. It doesn’t need to be exact, it’s intended to give the impression of flowers and be a background for your beautiful butterfly.

When you are happy with the floral areas, iron them right on the parchment paper with a hot steam iron, for about 30 seconds in each area. When cool, carefully peel off of the parchment paper– they will still be sticky on the back– and place them on your background fabric.
